Finding the section is the easy part. Which edition governs a job, how an amendment reaches work already filed, and what a provision requires in a particular condition are judgement calls an index cannot make. Start with the decision path, then request review if the consequence matters.

Sources: New York City Department of Buildings, published construction code volumes for the 2022 and 2014 editions, and the Existing Building Code as enacted by Local Law 33 of 2026. The PDFs served here are copies taken on the date shown above; DOB may have republished since, and every provision links to the official copy on nyc.gov. Provision text is extracted from those PDFs by machine, so numbering, tables and figures can differ from the printed page. The Existing Building Code does not take effect until 17 July 2027 and the text held here is the enacted local law rather than DOB’s published code volume.
